Biden Administration Faces Scrutiny Over Mishandling of Documents

After months of denying any involvement in the mishandling of government documents, the Biden Administration is finally facing the music. And it's not a song they are likely to enjoy.

On Tuesday, federal investigators conducted a thirteen-hour search of Joe Biden’s Delaware residence, reportedly discovering half a dozen items marked with classified markings. This comes after similar discoveries at his Washington office and garage at his Wilmington home in late December.

These startling revelations have already sparked intense scrutiny from Republicans eager to wield their newly acquired subpoena power, as well as Democrats questioning why the White House failed to inform the public about these initial discoveries.

Republican Hypocrisy on Full Display

Although both President Trump and President Biden have faced special counsel investigations for their respective misconducts with government documents, there is no denying that Republicans are treating both cases differently.

For months, Trump had resisted efforts by authorities to retrieve hundreds of records marked classified from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida — yet House Republicans have been quick to launch an investigation into Biden's handling of sensitive materials which "may have compromised national security". It is clear that Republicans are more willing to let Trump off than hold Biden accountable for his mistakes.

Senator Joe Manchin voiced disapproval towards Vice President Biden's statement that he has "no regrets" about not informing the public sooner — furthering an air of distrust around how much information the White House has been withholding from Americans over this incident. Meanwhile Senator Tim Kaine asked questions such as "How many documents are we talking about? Dozens? A handful or hundreds?" and "why were they taken?". It appears that even amongst Democrats there is very little clarity on what exactly happened here.

The Curious Case Of Mike Pence

In what could be seen as another hypocritical move by conservatives, news broke out on Tuesday that aides to former Vice President Mike Pence discovered several classified-marked documents stored in boxes at his Indiana home — yet instead of facing any kind of heat for this decision like Democrats have with Joe Biden's case, Congressman James Comer praised Pence instead for “following the process” unlike what he accused Biden White House staff for supposedly doing: “withholding information from Congress and American people”.

In addition Congresswoman Elise Stefanik also brushed aside any need for additional scrutiny despite three top presidential contenders now being involved in these controversies surrounding sensitive material mishandling implying she believes only one group deserves accountability here - democrats.

The Bigger Picture

These recent events beg us all to consider how arcane our system can be when it comes to classifying information— transparency advocates claim it incentivizes a culture where secrecy often trumps accountability but ultimately its unclear who holds ultimate responsibility here: Is it our elected officials or those who classify information? We might never know but one things clear: Nobody wants their secrets revealed especially when you're running for president!
