How LBJ Predicted That The South Would Become A Republican Stronghold

Wow! It’s hard to believe that it has been 50 years since Lyndon Johnson made the landmark statement, “We've lost the south for a generation.” But what did he really mean? Was it true? To get to the bottom of this mystery, I recently talked with Bill Moyers, Johnson’s special assistant when the Civil Rights Act passed.

When Moyers asked him if it was quite a day, Lyndon responded: “Well, I think we may have lost the south for your lifetime – and mine." It wasn't said sarcastically or dramatically; more so as a throwaway comment which was quickly forgotten about by both parties in attendance. Little did they know that this single statement would become one of history's most famous predictions!

It's no surprise though; even back then LBJ had an immense understanding of politics making him an exceptional analyst in his field. He quickly realized how his civil rights legislation could hugely reshape American political landscapes - particularly impacting those in the South - which is why he made sure not leave any stone unturned when campaigning for his upcoming Presidential Election against Barry Goldwater from Arizona (a hard-right senator).

He briefly threatened not attending Democratic National Convention due to tension surrounding seating Mississippi delegation and especially Fannie Lou Hamer - an incredible civil rights activist who had faced countless attacks working towards registering Black voters in Mississippi at such an early stage.(That being said) Despite all this tension LBJ decided attend anyway which led him win in five southern states (namely Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee Texas & Virginia). Everyone watching was elated as they knew Johnson had just saved himself from humiliation by winning over the south despite all odds being against him!

How Today's Political Landscape Has Been Affected By This Single Event

Fast forward 50 years later & we can now clearly see how drastically political landscapes have been affected by this single statement made by Lyndon Johnson back then; shifting more towards Republicans while Democrats are struggling without much success - particularly in The South where they're almost nonexistent! Joe Biden & two Democratic senators winning over Georgia during 2020/2022 have been rare successes otherwise Republicans have grabbed hold onto power pretty tightly here causing all kinds of chaos & destruction along their way(like suppressing voting Rights etc)

And yet despite all these changes caused due to LBJ's prediction which ultimately came true(to some extent) Bill Moyers believes that "maybe…merely a jest lightly uttered & soon forgotten" might be what actually happened between them as after repeating publicly only once "it took on a life of its own". Various versions also started floating around like 'for a generation' or 'once and for all' making historians debate & write about it ever since but we'll never truly know what went on inside those minds back then but we do know one thing is certain i.e regardless whether intended or not Lydon Johnson predicted something huge with merely few words spoken out loud!!
