What kind of world are we living in when a documentary about the life of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi can't even be aired? This is an absolute travesty. Despite all the attempts to block this documentary, I've seen clips and it has become clear that Modi is more than just a right-wing leader, he's a dictator.
The BBC wanted to take an honest look at Modi and his time as prime minister and chief minister during the Gujarat riots in 2002. The investigation uncovered memos showing that western diplomats and the British government had criticised Modi's conduct during the riots.
It's been almost two decades since then but it appears nothing has changed under Narendra Modi - apart from his rise in power. The documentary was not aired in India but its content had been circulating on social media which prompted a vehement response from the ruling BJP government accusing it of being “a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative”.
More than three hundred former judges, bureaucrats, and prominent figures have come together to condemn this heinous attack on freedom of speech by issuing joint statements accusing BBC of pushing British imperialist agenda and 'setting itself up as both judge & jury'. Shameful!
Ever since coming into power in 2014, Narendra Modi has tried hard to stifle freedom of speech by attacking critics & journalists alike through state & judicial harassment. In fact India ranked 150th out of 180 countries last year on press freedom index – its worst position ever! Did anyone expect anything else? Of course not! How can you expect fair media coverage when right wingers are so threatened by independent reporting? It's only natural they would try their best to silence any opposition voices that speak out against them – no matter how unethical or illegal their tactics may be!
To make matters worse, what have we heard recently? A film venerating Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse is set for release while this documentarhy about PM Modiji is blocked under emergency laws enacted by Indian Government itself… Talk about double standards!! It only serves as further evidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want truth getting out there for people to know what really happened during Gujarat riots 2002 or get any other information regarding his wrong doings over past six years as PM India – now we know why he went ahead with these shady laws!!
Censorship is never acceptable no matter which form or guise it takes but unfortunately India has become one such place where censorship is rampant & rampant without anyone batting an eye… This cannot continue if democracy wants survive; if we want our voices heard then these oppressive measures must be stopped before it gets too late otherwise our only hope lies with international court systems like United Nations & European Court Human Rights (ECHR).
Unfortunately nobody except us knows what’s going inside Indian government as they have done everything possible close doors off public scrutiny whether through banning press conferences/interviews with members opposition party or blocking BBC’s documentaries etc.. All these measures are meant keep truth hidden from public so people don’t find out what really happening inside closed walls our political leaders' offices… We must stand together fight against such suppression because let me tell you something; if truth doesn't prevail then nothing else will.
