Nick Kyrgios, the Australian tennis wild child, has put an end to his long injury break, just in time for the release of the highly anticipated Netflix documentary Break Point. The 10-part series follows the "Generation Next" of tennis, which includes Kyrgios and his friend [Thanasi Kokkinakis], as they challenge the game's top players such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
Kyrgios Injury Concerns
Concerns over Nick Kyrgios’ physical and mental state had grown since he withdrew from the Davis Cup team at the last minute, citing an ankle injury. However, Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley put a stop to those worries by announcing Kyrgios would be playing Djokovic in a friendly exhibition match at Rod Laver Arena on the 13th of January.
Revelations in the Documentary
The first episode of Break Point focuses on Kyrgios and Kokkinakis as they recount their remarkable run of success at the Australian Open in 2020. Kyrgios talks about how he was "spiraling out of control," drinking every night, until his girlfriend Costeen Hatzi stepped in to save him from his chaotic first years on tour.
The Australian Open match is not the only parallel between Kyrgios' life on and off the court. Kyrgios' documentary reveals his doubts about ever returning to a "full" tennis schedule, as it often means too much time away from family and loved ones.
Kyrgios' Feud with Tsitsipas Explored
The documentary also explores the long-running feud between Kyrgios and Greek champion Stefanos Tsitsipas. In Break Point, Tsitsipas defends Kyrgios, saying he isn't a bad person, but just becomes the "devil" on court. The second part of the documentary follows Kyrgios on his run to the Wimbledon final last year, where he lost to Djokovic in four sets.
Kyrgios hopes that Break Point will give people a better understanding of him as a person, rather than just a tennis player. He believes this will help to grow the sport and bring in new fans.
