NYC Becomes First In The WORLD To Provide Free Abortion Pills

Yesterday, New York City began to provide free abortion pills at a city-run sexual health clinic in the Bronx. I guess it's like a super cool thing that no other city has done yet?

Mayor Eric Adams said they were the first and he seemed really proud of it. Um...I don't know much else but it sounds pretty awesome. He made the announcement during a City Hall news conference on Tuesday which must have been quite something to see.

The program will eventually be available in four public health clinics and patients won't have to pay anything for it, which is great! It's being funded by this $1.2 million package for sexual health services that the city set aside. And once all of the clinics are up and running they should be able to do up to 10,000 medication abortions per year! But wait there's more – they're open to anyone who needs them from inside or outside of New York City too!? Even people without immigration status can get access so that's pretty cool I guess?

Since last summer, when Roe v Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court, New York City has been working hard to make sure women have access abortions even if federal laws are trying their hardest not to let them get one. This is why Mayor Adams signed this NYC Abortion Rights Act back in August which was basically a package of six bills from the City Council about ensuring medication abortions are free at Department of Health clinics. Then November happened and there was this new Abortion Access Hub launched in the Big Apple – its purpose is help connect women with abortion providers across town (and across states!) as well as providing financial support services like transportation or lodging if needed because let’s face it sometimes these things can be expensive…even if they're already free somewhere else 🤔

In addition to all these programs put together by Mayor Adams and his team – just recently even more good news came out as US Food and Drug Administration allowed certified pharmacies (whatever those are?) dispense something called “mifepristone” which apparently helps end pregnancies? Crazy stuff right?! Until now only certified healthcare providers could order prescribe & dispense those pills but now anyone with a prescription can get them through mail order while Covid-19 restrictions are still lingering around everywhere – so that’s pretty amazing too if you ask me! ¯_(ツ)_/¯

It looks like we may finally make some progress on reproductive rights after all huh!? 2021 looks a little brighter every day don't ya think?? Let us hope that soon enough cities around America (and dare I say even around world!!) will follow NYC’s lead when it comes providing safe & easy access abortion pills for everyone who needs them 👏🏼 So until then let us spread our arms wide open & welcome change with warm embrace ❤️
